Fort Smith is the second-largest city in the state of Arkansas, home to over 86,000 residents, and sits as one of the two county seats of Sebastian County. Fort Smith also sits as the primary city in the Fort Smith, AR-OK metropolitan statistical area, home to just under 300,000 residents and a major metro area in western Arkansas. The metropolitan area spans five counties across two states. The city acts as a regional manufacturing, distribution and retail center for western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma and has been a vital part of the region’s economic health and infrastructure since its founding.

Fort Smith was founded as a military post in 1817, as indicated by its name. First established near what is known as Belle Point, the original fort is long gone, and was actually abandoned for a time before the U.S. Army moved back into the area in the late 1830’s. During the 1840’s and 50’s the fort was a major organizing area for expeditions out west and to help police hostile Native American tribes during the turbulent settlement of the region. During the American Civil War the fort was occupied for a time by the Confederate Army, though control was wrested back during campaigns in the Western Theater and was firmly under Union control by late 1863, and would remain so until the end of the war. Fort Smith continued to grow steadily during the 20th century and saw a minor population boom after the construction of Interstate 40 and its auxiliary, Interstate 540.

During the summer months average daily highs in Fort Smith tend to reach into the 90’s, with a record high of 115 degrees Fahrenheit recorded in August. During the winter months, however, average daily highs reach into the low-to-mid 50’s and overnight lows dropping down into the low 30’s, sometimes below freezing. Snow is relatively uncommon in the area, though not entirely unheard of; still, the weather in Fort Smith is generally agreeable year-round.
