Fort Collins is a city in as well as the county seat of Larimer County, Colorado. A home rule municipality, Fort Collins is home to over 148,000, making it the fourth-largest city in the state of Colorado, and is currently the home of Colorado State University, a major economic boon for the city. Fort Collins has routinely been named as one of the best places to live in the entire United States, including #1 on Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live list in 2006, and #2 in 2008. Fort Collins may be a mid-size college town, but the university gives rise to a vibrant culture influenced by the perpetually young college students. It has a rather active nightlife, and the city is well-known for its high-quality microbreweries and the local music scene, which is active as well.
Fort Collins originated as a military outpost, founded in 1864. Its purpose was mainly to protect the overland mail route to California, but the army always has a troupe following along, and a small town grew up around the fort virtually overnight. In 1868 citizens of Fort Collins succeeded in moving the county seat of Larimer County from Laporte, and during the 1870’s the population saw its first population boom, along with the founding of Colorado State University. It would continue to grow slowly until the end of World War II; the 1950’s brought double the population to Fort Collins. Growth and development during the latter half of the 20th century, including several major land grabs in the 80’s and 90’s, saw Fort Collins emerge as a retail powerhouse in the vicinity, and today it continues that economic role. Colorado State University also contributes greatly to the local economy, particularly by bringing in perpetually-new students every year, which has led to job creation in the area.
During the summer months, Fort Collins can get pretty warm; average highs during the depths of season hover in the high 80’s. Overnight lows during the summer often drop into the upper 50’s or lower 60’s, giving the city a warm-but-comfortable climate during much of the summer. During the winter months, however, average highs only top out in the upper 40’s, with December typically being the coldest month of the year. Overnight lows often fall into the teens, with average snowfall during the winter being 7 inches a month between December and March.
