Concord is a city in as well as the county seat of Merrimack County, New Hampshire; it is also the capital of the entire state. Home to over 42,600 residents, Concord is the third-largest city by population in the state of New Hampshire and is the largest city in Merrimack County. Concord is the home of the University of New Hampshire School of Law, which is the only law school in the state, and it is also the home of the New Hampshire Technical Institute as well as the Granite State Symphony Orchestra. The city is known for its industrial roots and modern rebirth, and today its economy is one of the strongest in the New England region.

Founded in 1725 as the Plantation of Peacock, and at the time under control of Massachusetts, Concord was officially incorporated in 1734 as Rumford. Over time, the nearby town of Bow and the citizens of Rumford had a dispute over boundaries; the name “Concord” was chosen by then-Governor Benning Wentworth in 1765, and the name has remained the same ever since. Over time, Concord grew in prominence and affluence, and was named as the seat of government for New Hampshire in 1808, and over the course of the next century Concord would become a prominent supplier of granite, textiles, furniture and printing, as well as being a railroad hub during the late 19th century. Though today much of the city’s manufacturing is gone, it is still a key regional railroad center and has a diverse, vibrant economy based on retail, health care and insurance.

During the summer months, average daily highs in Concord tend to reach into the low 80’s, with overnight lows usually falling into the mid-to-upper 50’s, making for relatively pleasant summers throughout the season. During the winter, however, temperatures drop drastically, with average highs only reaching into the low-to-mid 30’s and overnight lows usually falling down into the low-to-mid teens. Concord sees an average of 14 inches of snow per month between December and March, making winter auto transport more difficult to and from the city and, really, the entire area. This generally leads to higher prices and lower availability during the coldest parts of the year.
