Chesapeake is a city located in the U.S. state of Virginia. An independent city located in the southeastern corner of the state, Chesapeake is the third-largest city in Virginia by population, home to over 222,200 residents. Despite its size, it does not anchor its own metropolitan area, instead belonging to the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Located just south of Norfolk, a major naval hub in Virginia, Chesapeake is widely regarded as a military town, since Norfolk is one of the largest naval bases on the eastern seaboard.
Chesapeake’s founded dates only to 1963, but the area has been settled since 1691 and the formation of former Norfolk County. For a time, Chesapeake was largely considered to be an extension of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and was primarily rural prior to the turn of the 20th century. The city of South Norfolk was incorporated in 1919 and originally included areas of Chesapeake; at the time, it incorporated as part of South Norfolk to prevent further annexation of its territory, which first began in 1871 during the height of the Reconstruction period. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a wave of political change engulfed southeastern Virginia, and it was a part of this wave that caused Chesapeake to be reformed out of what was then known as South Norfolk. Today, Chesapeake extends to old Norfolk County’s borders.
Chesapeake is characterized by warm, humid summers and cooler winters. Located near the coast, the Atlantic Ocean has a profound effect on the temperatures in Chesapeake year-round, cooling the city during the summer and keeping it warmer during the winter. Average summer highs only reach into the low to mid 80’s, with overnight lows often dropping into the upper 60’s and lower 70’s. Winter brings cold weather, and occasional snow, but most of the year it is relatively easy for auto shippers to run routes including Chesapeake without having to worry too much about snow and ice.
