Athens is a city in and the county seat of McMinn County, Tennessee and it is the principal city of the Athens Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the larger Chattanooga-Cleveland-Athens Combined Statistical Area. McMinn County was organized in 1819 and the city was founded to be the county seat of the newly formed county. It was originally named Pumpkintown, though the name was changed in 1823 and after the railroad came to the town the area grew rapidly. It was a major manufacturing town after the American Civil War and today the economy has shifted from manufacturing to service-based jobs.
