Abilene is a city in and the county seat of Taylor County, Texas. It currently has a total population of just over 120,000 residents, and sits as the primary city of the Abilene Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of around 158,000. The city is also home to Dyess Air Force Base, which is located on the west side of the city and has a substantial impact on the city’s overall economic health and growth.

Abilene was first founded in 1881 as a stock shipping point, and the construction of railroads through the area resulted in a major growth spurt during a relatively short amount of time – the town was incorporated just a year later, in 1882. Abilene was chosen as the future home of McMurry University, which is still there to this day. Abilene, like many U.S. cities, was a victim of urban flight during the 60’s and 70’s; it has only been recently that the city implemented an urban renewal program (one of the first cities in Texas to do so), putting a strong emphasis on tourism, retail, finance and healthcare, among other service-based industries.

Abilene sits firmly in the desert, which means high temperatures during the day and cold temperatures at night. During the summer months the average temperature during the day hovers around 93 degrees, with nighttime lows dropping to around 72 degrees. During the winter months, however, temperatures tend to drop down into the low 50’s for a high and just above freezing overnight.
