Stimulus Packages and the Transportation Sector

Taking a Few Steps Back to Get Ahead

In today’s fluctuating economy there have been many stimulus packages presented in a variety of different areas. Under the new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, states are obligated to designate 1/2 of the stimulus money received by June 30th, 2009 or the state will lose the money. One of the areas in which many states seem to be concentrating on can be seen in the transportation sector. Each of the projects to which these funds were obligated to can not only be seen as improving roads, highways, and other bridges/structures, but more importantly, these projects actually aid in providing much needed jobs for contractors and other construction laborers.

Utilizing portions of these packages to strengthen the transportation sectors can be seen as a wise decision. Building, fixing, and/or rebuilding these areas help create safer road ways, and can increase the aesthetics of any stateside. There are a wide range of projects which are being planned/implemented throughout a variety of states within the country. One example can be found in the state of Kansas. Kansas has dedicated approximately $196.2 million to its transportation sector, helping to provide further economic development throughout the state. One of the larger projects can be seen in an $82.3 million project, helping to improve U.S.-69. The aim of this specific project is to help deal with congestion on the highway, improving the flow of traffic in the area.

Other states are looking to improve the connection between the state and the citizens which reside within. Governor Perdue of North Carolina attributes the reasons for designating money to the transportation sector as “They will improve critical routes to help better connect North Carolinians around the state.” These projects will take place throughout 21 different counties within North Carolina. Other states such as Pennsylvania have taken similar approaches. Beaver County has designated some of its stimulus money to providing a makeover for the Beaver-Rochester Bridge. When questioned as to the motives of the states decision, Governor Ed Rendell replied

"Right now, Beaver County needs this economic stimulus to get people to work and to rebuild its infrastructure in order to attract new residents and businesses. Stories like this one are playing out across the state as more than $1 billion in federal transportation stimulus funds is supplementing the $1.8 billion in work Pennsylvania had already planned for this year."

Overall, it can be seen as a wise decision to designate a portion of these funds to the transportation sector. By building and remodeling roadways and bridges the states are providing much need job opportunities for their citizens as well as helping to further economically develop these areas in an attempt to enhance their desirability to others. However, can these projects have an impact on the world of auto transportation? The answer is absolutely!

First and foremost, when any type of construction project is involved, whether it is road or bridge, there will always be lane closures in order to make room for equipment as well as man power to work. These lane closures will undoubtedly lead to increased level of congestion in traffic in certain areas. With the level of traffic increased, one of two things can happen. The auto hauler can experience traffic, slowing the trips progress, or, the trucker may choose to reroute also lengthening the trip.

On the other end of the spectrum, while these construction projects may indeed pose as nuisances temporarily, in the long run they will inevitably create a more lucrative outcome for the auto transportation industry. By adding more roads, rebuilding bridges, and attempting to alleviate areas with high traffic these projects can actually assist in shortening the amount of time a truckers journey can take. This will allow for more hauling jobs to complete in a decreased period of time, as well as adding to overall customer satisfaction and fluency of the trip.

So while at face value these projects may serve as a hindrance, upon completion they have the ability to provide a variety of opportunity to enhance the auto transportation industry.
