Should we keep out Mexican trucks?

This is a debate that has been raging for quite some time – indeed, ever since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed fifteen years ago. Congress has shut the border to Mexican trucking companies, and Mexico is beginning to respond by raising tariffs on certain items.

Though many supporters are crying about protectionism on part of the US, what we need to realize is that these Mexican trucks aren’t safe, and they don’t conform to our safety standards here in the United States. The State Department has advised against US citizens even going to Mexico, thanks mainly to the escalating drug wars that have been occurring in the country.

The bottom line is the fact that Mexican trucks are required to conform to the same safety and emission standards as US trucks and Mexican truck drivers are typically more dangerous because serious traffic violations are ignored in Mexico.

The Bush Administration opened the border to a select few trucks back in 2007, but the United States was unable to track when a participating truck entered the United States or where it went thereafter; also, they could not determine which trucks entered the US, making it much more dangerous for US drivers on US roads.

Ultimately, a NAFTA tribunal rules back in 2001 that the United States has the right to enforce safety standards, and the Obama administration is doing just that: by not letting Mexican trucks into the country, it stands to reason that we’re safer overall. Another thing that’s really helping the US in terms of safety is a new law that Washington State recently passed which expands the number of trucks in the state that can be tracked for safety violations. This could well include auto transport trucks.

The original bill had passed in 2007 and only focused on interstate trucks; however, the new bill expands the coverage of the bill to include garbage trucks, interstate charter buses and vehicles registered by the Utilities and Transportation Commission, according to The Olympian, and the State Patrol can stop trucks until their safety violations are repaired.

This bill is going to make people much safer, so watch out for other states to pass similar laws sometime in the near future. Trucking is getting safer, and thanks to progressive legislation from Washington State and the Obama administration, we’re going to be seeing only the safety trucks, driven by the safety drivers. That’s a great feeling.
