GM CEO to Step Down, Obama Urges Immediate Reorganization

The White House is out for blood. According to the AP, the administration has asked General Motors' CEO Rick Wagoner to step down immediately from his CEO position pending Obama's announcement of his plan to rescue the failing auto industry. According to anonymous officials inside the White House, the plan is simple: GM will receive enough money to allow a complete restructuring over the next 60 days as well as complete an alliance with Fiat SpA in the next 30 days.

But this doesn't mean that managers and executives in Detroit are sitting pretty. More managerial changes could be coming soon, pending more details from the Obama administration. Detroit has few ideas about what they would be, but are keeping their lids shut for now. "It would not be appropriate for us to speculate on the content of the announcement," one official from GM said.

Wagoner, the current CEO of GM, is still trying to hold on to his position desperately. In a Dec. 4th interview, he stated, "I'm doing what I do because it adds a lot of value to the company. It's not clear to me that experience in this industry should be viewed as a negative, but I'm going to do what's right for the company and I'll do it in consultation with the (GM) board (of directors)."

But Senator Charlie Schumer (D-NY) thinks that change might do the company – and the country – more good than harm. And he's not alone.

The current administration has already setup an "auto task force," which is designed to figure out just what is going on with Detroit and what can be done to fix it. Its formation may be old news, but unlike other task forces and groups setup under previous administrations, the auto task force is hard at work trying to figure out a solution to the problem. The task force as said that bankruptcy isn't off the table just yet – this is, however, considered a last-resort option should the company fail to make the necessary sacrifices.

All of this, however, still hasn't really hurt the auto transport industry as a whole. The auto transport industry is very well insulated, because people are always going to need to ship their vehicles in this country and in this time. Even if Detroit does go down, other automakers will take their place and the auto transport industry will still flourish. The troubles with Detroit (and, indeed, the troubles with the economy as a whole) have made way for more people to buy used cars at cheaper prices from other dealerships not in their area. This means that more people need to ship their vehicle, and more people are utilizing brokerages.

Auto carriers themselves, however, have been hit hard by the economy taking a nosedive (Trucking Industry Hit Hard) due to high diesel prices, but with the lowering rates the business is soaring once again. People need vehicles, and people won't stop buying vehicles; which means people won't stop shipping vehicles. Which, in turn, means that auto brokerages and auto carriers won't be out of a job just yet.

Whether you are shipping an GM, whether you're a CEO about to relocate or an average Joe who needs a great price for vehicle shipping, you can get fast auto shipping quotes right here!
