When West Virginia decided to secede from Virginia, the case was brought to the Supreme Court of the U.S. What happened was that following the Civil War, Virginia fought the secession vote that was levied during the war, but Congress passed a joint resolution in 1866 that recognized the secession. However, there was a provision: West Virginia had to pay the state of Virginia for the lands that it took, estimated in the $12,000,000 range. The final fees were paid off in 1939.
