The state itself is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the "Virgin Queen" (hence the name Virginia). It was one of the thirteen original colonies that revolted against the British Empire and was also the first state to be continually inhabited by the British since its foundig. Most of the battles of the Civil War were fought in Virginia, leaving a permanent scar on the landscape. Many influential battles (which highlight the stupidity of early Union commanders) include the Battle of Fredricksburg, Fist and Second Manassas, and the Battle of Chancellorsville, as well as the unsuccessful invasion from the Chesapeake culminating in the Seven Days Battles.
