According to a 2005 US Census estimate the area’s population was just over 16,000 and is actually the home of Eastern Connecticut State University, as well as the Windham Textile and History Museum.
Willimantic was incorporated in 1893 as an independent section of the town of Windham, though in 1983 the city government was dissolved. The area reverted back to the town and is technically a part of Windham, though it still retains its old name. It is also the birthplace of Senator Chris Dodd.
