Texarkana is a city in Bowie County, Texas and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 34,000, though that number has grown to over 36,500, at least according to the 2010 U.S. Census. It is just half of the greater Texarkana city, which is actually divided down State Line Avenue – the other side is Texarkana, Arkansas. The area is colloquially known as the Ark-La-Tex area, since Texarkana is divided in two by the Texas-Arkansas state line, and the state of Louisiana – notably, the city of Shreveport – is located just south.
Texarkana was sort of a planned community; in the 1850’s, railroad companies understood the potential in the Texarkana area, and were eager to exploit it. Over the ensuing decades they pushed westward, and Texarkana was founded in the early 1870’s. It began as a railroad town, mainly supplying trains as they headed west into the Texas desert, though over the years new residents and businesses settled down in the area. Today, Texarkana is known for its diverse economy, and the city puts a major emphasis on education – it currently has numerous elementary, middle and high schools located in its city limits, and it is also the home of a community college and a branch of the prestigious Texas A&M University.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Texarkana get pretty high – mid-to-upper 90’s averages during the summer type of high. Triple digit temperatures are relatively common, and overnight lows usually only drop down into the mid-to-upper 70’s. During the winter months, however, average highs usually reach into the mid-to-upper 50’s, with overnight lows usually dropping into the upper 30’s and lower 40’s. Snow is relatively uncommon in the Ark-La-Tex region, which makes auto transportation to and from the area that much easier.
