Springfield is a city in Hampden County, Massachusetts, as well as the county seat. The city was originally settled in 1635, and in 1640 the name was changed to Springfield. However, disaster struck in 1936 when the Connecticut River flooded, leaving thousands of people homeless, entire sections of the town destroyed, and costing over $200,000,000 in 1936 money. Today, however, the city is once again beautiful, with many civic improvement projects continuing through the decade.

The city lies in a mix between a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate, a situation that is normal throughout New England. Summers are warm and humid while winters are incredibly cold, windy and snowy. Summer temperatures rarely reach higher than 85 degrees, while lows can drop to around 65 or so; however, in the winter, temperatures reach no higher than the mid 40’s, and oftentimes lows are below freezing.
