The city was founded in the late 1850′s as a small area where wine and honey were produced. The city began to grow when the Santa Fe Railroad decided to build a train station in the area, and it began growing slowly on the back of the agricultural community that had developed in the area. In the 1950′s the city experienced a large period of fast growth, though the largest period of expansion was between 1990 and 2000, where the population exploded from 33,800 to 82,743.
