San Francisco, California is one of the largest cities in California with a population just under 800,000 (it actually ranks 4th in the state, behind San Diego, San Jose and Los Angeles), and 13th in the nation in terms of population. Like most other cities along the coast of California, it was founded by the Spanish as a mission town during the 18th century. It is also the site of many LGBT movements during the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s, and typically has always had the largest LGBT population in the United States.

The city itself was founded as a mission in 1776, and upon Mexico gaining independence from Spain in 1821 and in 1835 the first Englishman settled there. He began to draw up plans for a much larger city than what was currently there, and construction began not long afterwards, until the Mexican War in 1846. The California Gold Rush brought interest back to the city, and it expanded very rapidly over the five years or so that the gold rush was drawing new people. However, the city gained an unsavory reputation as being a town of lawlessness, with prostitution gambling and murdering going on all over the place, particularly the Barbary Coast region.

However, despite its lawlessness, several entrepreneurs made their way to San Francisco and some of the largest businesses today are still headquartered in the city, including Wells Fargo and others. In 1906, a fire destroyed most of the city, and over 400,000 people were homeless after the great earthquake and fire. Rebuilding incredibly rapid, and San Francisco enjoyed another boom after the rebuilding was complete, and is now one of the largest and most successful cities in the United States.

The city, with its Mediterranean climate, enjoys sunshine year-round as well as mild temperatures. The city is known for its incredibly foggy mornings, typically due to the ocean (which it borders). Its highs are around 70 in the summer and mid-50’s in the winter, while lows rarely dip below 45-50 degrees. The city’s Chinatown is one of the oldest and most well-known areas in the entire United States, and the city and its inhabitants enjoy a very high standard of living.
