Riverside is a city in and the county seat of Riverside County, California, and it is part of the vast Inland Empire of California. It has a population of over 303,000 residents. Riverside is the home of the University of California – Riverside, or UCR, which is located in the northeastern part of Riverside. The university is a major boon to the city, as UCR is a research university, and with the many students, faculty and supporting staff the university offers a lot of jobs and brings a large influx of residents into the city every year.
Riverside was founded in the 1870’s and, thanks to its many orange trees and vast orange groves, the citrus industry exploded in Riverside. By the turn of the 20th century the city was the wealthiest city, per capita, in the United States, though today the industry has crumbled and the city is known for its traffic congestion (city officials are working hard, however, to remedy the problem). During the summer months the city’s temperatures typically reach into the low-to-mid 90’s during the day, though temperatures in triple digits are not entirely uncommon. Overnight summer lows tend to drop into the mid 60’s, making for more mild evenings. During the winter months temperatures cool, as they should; average daily highs only reach into the low-to-mid 70’s, while overnight temperatures tend to drop down into the mid-to-upper 40’s.
