Pueblo, Colorado is a home municipality and one of the largest in the state of Colorado. Its population was just over 100,000 people as of 2007, and the city receives just over a foot of rain annually. However, due to its location in the “banana belt,” the city receives considerably less snow than other cities in Colorado, and is actually known to be more arid than Denver or Grand Junction.

The city was originally founded in 1842 as Fort Pueblo, by George Simpson, and he and his family settled there not long afterward. It was settled at the bank of the Arkansas River, which at the time made up the border between Mexico and the United States, and the city survived for 12 years before Native Americans finally raided the settlement in 1854, and the site was abandoned until the Colorado gold rush of 1859, where settlers renamed the fort “Pueblo” and proceeded to settle there. It grew over the next hundred and fifty years until it became what it is today.

The city itself is part of the “banana belt,” which is a string of arid desert-like land in Colorado that receives little to no snow or rain and is typically somewhat hotter than the rest of the state. Typical temperatures can reach as high as the mid-to-upper 80’s in the summer, with lows reaching between 30 and 40 degrees. The city, during the beginning of the 20th century, was built mainly on manufacturing, supplied with the water of the Arkansas River, and ever since the city has been built on manufacturing and is still one of the leaders in Colorado.
