Port St. Lucie is a city in St. Lucie County, Florida, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 88,000. The city is a part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of over 400,000. It is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation.
It was home to relatively few farmers and some fishermen until the early 1950’s. At that time, a company called the General Development Corporation purchased the land around Port St. Lucie and opened the Fort River Bridge, which opened the city to the outside for the first time. It attracted many new residents in a short amount of time and today the city is still showing signs of growth, despite economic slowdown in recent years.
During the summer average highs typically hit around 90 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping down to around 72 degrees overnight. During the winter months, however, average highs hit around 74 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping down to around 49 degrees overnight.
