Orlando is a city in as well as the county seat of Orange County, Florida. Home to over 249,000 residents in the city proper, as well as 2.1 million in the Greater Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area, Orlando is the fifth-largest city in Florida. Much of Orlando’s lack of population has to do with the fact that there are numerous bedroom cities that are technically separate from Orlando. The Greater Orlando area is the third-largest metro area in the state of Florida.

Orlando was founded around 1837, though records from that era are shoddy at best – what we do know, however, is that the city started as an outpost during the Second Seminole War and became the county seat of Orange County in 1856. The city boomed during this time, and Orlando flourished during the early 20th century, thanks primarily to the Florida land boom.

Unfortunately, growth slowed at the start of the 1930’s, as the land boom ended and the Great Depression began. After the end of World War II, though, population again began to rise, and today the city is a major hub for industry in the state and is also a major tourist spot, being the home of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios – Orlando, to name a few.

During the summer months, average daily highs in Orlando usually reach into the low-to-mid 90’s during the day, though triple-digit highs have been recorded. Overnight lows usually drop into the low-to-mid 70’s, making most nights in Orlando mild, at least in terms of the temperatures.

Winter temperatures fall slightly, with highs during the winter topping out in the mid-to-upper 70’s and lows usually dropping down into the upper 50’s overnight. Like many cities in Florida, Orlando is a popular snowbird destination; residents of northern states flee to Florida during the winter to escape the cold weather up north and to enjoy the mild climate down south.
