Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska and is the county seat of Douglas County, located on the eastern border of the state. The city’s population was just over 432,000 at the time of the 2000 census, though the population has increased since that time. The greater Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area is home to over 1.2 million residents spread over eight counties, and its size marks the area as the 60th largest Metropolitan area in the United States.

Like many cities in Nebraska, Omaha was built on industry, most notably the railroads. Many immigrants made their way to the city because of the promise of jobs, and as a result of the influx of new residents, violence in the city began to grow.

Prostitution, gambling and violence were common during the 19th century, while the city lacked a decent police force; this changed in 1881 when the governor sent National Guard troops to the city to put down the violence.

The city stayed relatively quiet afterwards, though labor disputes were still common; during World War II, the city helped build the country’s navy after Pearl Harbor, and it also contributed the Enola Gay, the bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. Today, the city continues to grow and is in the midst of an urban renewal campaign, complete with skyscrapers in the downtown area.

Temperatures in the city, during the summer, typically hover in the low to mid 80\’s during the day, while after the sun falls the temperatures drop to around 62 degrees, the average low during the summer. Winter months see a drastic change in temperature, with average highs hovering around 33 degrees and lows getting into the low teens. Snowfall is common, and typically the city will receive around 30 inches of rainfall per year.
