The city was founded as a trading city in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company, and during the 19th century served as a major port (a role that it still fulfills today). As such, slaves were common in the Big Easy, and due to its location on the Mississippi River was a key strategic target during the Civil War, which was in turn neutralized by the Union blockade in late 1861, and as such the city was spared major destruction, leaving it relatively intact. After the war manufacturing jobs started to move away, and now the city relies mainly on high-tech jobs and tourism. In 2005, the city was struck by Hurricane Katrina, and amidst the chaos much of the city was flooded, including the Lower 9th Ward. Government response was sluggish at best, and thousands of people were displaced and have yet to return home, three years later.
The climate is humid subtropical, which means that summers are typically hot and humid, and unlike most Midwest cities, summers are mild with the occasional cold snap during late December or early January. Average highs during summer hover around the upper 90’s, while the lows drop around 65. During the winter, temperatures get up to about 65, while lows drop in the low 50’s to high 40’s.
