During the Civil War, it served as the capital of the Confederate States of America before it was changed to Richmond, VA, in 1861. During the war itself, the city was mostly spared, thanks to its location and the fact that the capital had been moved to Richmond early in the war to keep the war near the Border States. However, Alabama (and Montgomery, especially) suffered severe infrastructural damage due to Sherman’s “total war” campaign against the region.
The city also served as a beacon for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s, and was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King’s church while he was a pastor there. In fact, Dr. King’s four day march for justice was conducted from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. However, during the 20th Century, the city fell on hard times with its lack of manufacturing and major economic crises engulfed the city. Its revival came when the Hyundai Motor Corporation built its first automobile plant in the city, revitalizing jobs and bringing the economy back on track.
Like most other parts of Alabama, Montgomery’s climate varies with the seasons (as do most cities in the United States). In the summer it is generally hot, with temperatures averaging around 91 degrees, while in the winter temperatures rarely drop below 40 degrees. The city rarely is hit by any natural disasters, lying outside the boundaries for tornadoes and hurricanes.
