Minneapolis is the largest city in the US state of Minnesota, and is also the county seat of Hennepin County. It lies directly adjacent to St. Paul, the state’s capital, and is known as one part of the Twin Cities. As of the 2000 census, the city’s population was sitting at just under 378,000 and was continuing to climb.

The city was first founded around the St. Anthony waterfall, which supplied a source of cheap power to the city. Though the idea of using water as power has been around since the 1st century BC, the city was heralded as a modern wonder, and people were anxious to live in the city. The city has been known for its battles against discrimination, and was one of the first cities to abolish slavery and give African Americans the right to vote. However, in the 1920’s through the 1950’s, the city razed some two hundred buildings across twenty-five city blocks to help spur urban renewal, and many historic buildings were destroyed, thus sparking a new interest in historic preservation in both the city and the state.

The city is known for its long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Typical summer temperatures rarely reach above 75 degrees, while lows typically hover around the mid 50’s. However, in the winter, temperatures rarely get above 25 degrees, and lows typically hover in the single digits, pouring snow onto denizens of the city.
