The city was founded along the Oregon Trail in the mid-19th century, and was named after nearby Fort Kearny, an outpost that was also conveniently located along the Oregon Trail. The fort was a trading post at the time, and some settlers decided to remain behind and, thus, created Kearny. The “e” was added by mistake, most likely by postmen who kept misspelling the name of the town. The city continues to grow, at an average rate of 1,000 residents per year, and the university located in the city is its largest employer.

Temperatures in the city, during the summer, typically hover in the low to mid 80\’s during the day, while after the sun falls the temperatures drop to around 62 degrees, the average low during the summer. Winter months see a drastic change in temperature, with average highs hovering around 33 degrees and lows getting into the low teens. Snowfall is common, and typically the city will receive around 30 inches of rainfall per year.
