Ithaca is a city in and the county seat of Tompkins County, New York, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 29,000. It is a member of the Ithaca-Tompkins County Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is currently home to Cornell University, a major Ivy League school in the state.

Ithaca is a part of the Central New York Military Tract, which was land in central New York given to veterans of the American Revolution. It was named after the town of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, and while the city was poised to grow after the Erie Canal was built, other surrounding cities ended up growing while Ithaca remained a relatively small town. The city was chartered in 1887.
