The city was founded in the late 1700’s, and was chosen as the state capital of Indiana in 1820, and is the only state capital to be in the exact center of the state. The city lies directly on top of the National Road, and in 1847 the first rail lines were connected to Indianapolis, making expansion and future growth possible. The city continued to grow, but during the 1970’s and 80’s, the city experienced white flight and urban decay, a trend which has since been reversed, and the city is now thriving once again.
Like most other cities in the Midwest, Indianapolis has a humid continental climate, which means that it experiences four distinct seasons. During the summer months, temperatures typically top out around 87or so, while during the night lows can get around 60 degrees. During the winter, however, temperatures drop and snowfall is fairly common, with highs around 45 and lows below freezing during the heart of the winter.
