Hoover is a city in both Jefferson and Shelby County, Alabama, and is actually the largest suburb of Birmingham, the state capital. According to the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 62,000, though recent estimates project the population to be over 73,000. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Combined Statistical Area.

Hoover was incorporated in 1967 and, contrary to popular belief was not named after President Herbert Hoover, but rather William Hoover, a local insurance company owner. It has been known as Hoover since the early 1930′s, though growth was slow even after it was incorporated. However, when I-459 opened it brought many new residents and industry to come to the town, causing a huge explosion in the population of the town.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 85 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 50 degrees overnight. During the winter, however, temperatures cool down slightly, with highs typically topping out around 57 degrees during the day and lows dropping to around 42 degrees overnight.
