Hattiesburg is known as “The Hub City,” and is a city that lies in both Forrest and Lamar Counties in the state of Mississippi. As of 2007, the total Hattiesburg Metropolitan Statistical Area exceeded 150,000 residents, mainly because of a large number of people fleeing areas heavily affected by Hurricane Katrina. The city has passed Biloxi as Mississippi’s third largest city (in terms of population), and just south of Hattiesburg (yet still serviced by the city) is Camp Shelby, a National Guard training camp and the largest east of the Mississippi River.

The city was founded in 1882 by loggers looking for new timber, and was incorporated in 1884. The city is an important hub for several major rail lines, hence the nickname “Hub City,” and was an important stop on the railways from Meridian to New Orleans. Because of the many rail lines going through the city, Hattiesburg bloomed with major population influxes. It was the site of several major civil rights demonstrations, but today is known for its tolerance.

The city lies in a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Typically temperatures during the summer months hover around 90 degrees, with lows dipping around 70; in the winter, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 60 degrees, while lows dip down to around 38.
