Hartford is a city in as well as the capital of the U.S. state of Connecticut. Home to over 124,700 residents, Hartford is the second-largest city in the entire state, and anchors the Greater Hartford Metro Area, which is the largest metro area in the state of Connecticut, with a metro area population of over 1.8 million residents.

The city’s unofficial nickname is the “Insurance Capital of the World,” due to the high volume of insurance companies that are headquartered there, and it has overtaken New Orleans as the wealthiest city in the United States.

Hartford was founded in 1635, not long after Dutch explorers had scouted and mapped the region. It was originally called Newtown, but for reasons unknown they changed the name to Hartford, in honor of the English village of Hertford.

Thomas Hooker, who was one of the founders of the state of Connecticut, delivered a sermon in Hartford explaining that people had a right to govern themselves, and his sermon helped to install a basis for the United States Constitution.

Ironically, delegates from the state of Connecticut met in Hartford to discuss possible secession from the United States in 1814, though of course that fell through. Over time, Hartford has grown into an economic force in the region, and was once a major manufacturing area before the wave of deindustrialization hit the U.S. starting in the late 1970’s.

During the summer months, average daily highs usually only reach into the mid 80’s, though temperatures in the 90’s and even triple digits have been recorded (though the highest recorded temperature in Hartford is 103 degrees).

Overnight summer lows typically fall into the low 60’s, making for relatively pleasant evenings. In the winter, the temperatures drop severely and snow is common, with average highs only reaching into the mid-to-upper 30’s and overnight lows often dropping into the upper teens.
