The city was founded in 1635, not long after Dutch explorers had scouted and mapped the region. It was originally called Newtown, but for reasons unknown they changed the name to Hartford, in honor of the English village of Hertford. Thomas Hooker, who was one of the founders of the state of Connecticut, delivered a sermon in Hartford explaining that people had a right to govern themselves, and this sermon served as a basis for the United States Constitution. However, in 1814, delegates from the state of Connecticut met in Hartford to discuss possible secession from the United States, and later on (they didn’t secede, in case you were wondering) the city (and the state) was a center for abolitionist activities. During the 20th century, Hartford has experienced booms and busts, and many residents moved away from downtown and into suburbs, and this trend continues to this day.
The climate of Hartford is fairly typical of a New England town, characterized by humid, high-temperature summers and cold winters. Typical temperatures in the summer top out at 90 degrees, while lows typically don’t go below 60. However, in the winter, normal temperatures hover around 25 degrees, and can get as high as 35 and as low as -20 (that, however, is the record low in January, and the city rarely sees weather like that).
