Hagerstown is a city in northwestern Maryland and is actually the county seat of Washington County, Maryland, and is the largest city in the northwestern part of the state. Its population, in the city proper, was just under 40,000, and it’s urban area (the surrounding suburbs) has a population of 136,000, making Hagerstown the second largest city in Maryland.

The city was founded in the early 18th century, and was originally named Elizabethtown after the founder’s wife, Elizabeth. During the Civil War, and due to its strategic location, the city was used four different times as staging areas for troop movements, including both of Lee’s invasions into Maryland. After the war, the city became a major manufacturing center, and was known as “Hub City” due to the many railroads going through the city. That nickname has stuck, and to this day the railroads still run.

The city lies in a humid subtropical climate zone, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, blustery winters. July is typically the hottest month, with temperatures getting as high as 92 degrees, while dropping down to the low 70’s overnight. During the winter, temperatures peak at around 50 or so, with lows dropping around 29 degrees in the colder parts of the season.
