Grand Junction, Colorado, is a home municipality with a population just over 45,000, and is named after the junction of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, where the city is located. The city is actually a major commercial and transportation hub, acting as intermediary between the western and eastern United States. The city was made up mostly of agriculture, with farming being the biggest source of income for the city.It was first settled in the 1880’s, mostly after the major gold rushes were over and people were looking for a new way of life out west. Farming grew big, and with its prime location at the junction of two major rivers, irrigation was never a problem and the city grew steadily, and continues to grow today. In the 1960’s, however, is when the city made the transformation from agriculture-based to oil shale, and around this time Exxon-Mobil took up its base of operations in Grand Junction. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, the region was developed and worked, digging the oil out of the ground as quickly as possible. In 1982 is when Exxon pulled its support from the region and hightailed it out of there, causing a state-wide depression. However, this taught the leaders of the city that a diverse economy was the key to survival, and now the city is much more diversified, and is prospering because of it. Black Sunday, as it was known to the locals, would not happen again. The city is known for its mild summers and cold winters, much like Denver to the east. Its high temperatures in the summer hover in the mid-to-upper seventies, and in the winter it can drop to below freezing, which is fairly common not just in Grand Junction but throughout the state of Colorado. It is also known for great outdoor activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, fishing, hunting and much more.
