Fresno is a city in and the county seat of Fresno County, California, and the city is the largest inland city in the entire state of California. According to a recent US Census estimate conducted in early 2009 the city’s population was just under 500,000, which makes it the fifth largest city in the state of California. Fresno was founded in 1856 and was actually named for the mountain of ash trees that lined the San Joaquin River. Railroads came to the city in 1872 the railroad came to the city, which helped the city boom and allowed for its rapid expansion. The county seat of Fresno County was moved to the city in 1858 and after World War II the city’s agricultural ties were cut and gave way to urban development.
