Fort Hood is a United States Army post outside of Killeen Texas as well as a census-designated place in Bell County, Texas. It is located roughly between Austin and Waco and the population of the fort, according to the official US Census conducted in 2000, was just over 33,000. It was named after Confederate General John Bell Hood.

During World War II, testing ground was needed to test new tank destroyers developed to counter the German blitzkrieg, and Texas had land in abundance. 300 families had to move, however, to make room for the fort, and in 1942 the fort opened. By the end of the war there were over 50,000 troops station at the base, and today the fort routinely participates in national and international disaster and peacekeeping efforts.
