Danville is a city in and the county seat of Vermilion County, Illinois; according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 33,000. It is the principal city of the Danville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Danville and Vermilion County.

It was founded in 1827 by Guy Smith and the post office was established in May of the same year. It became a major industrial city during the late 19the century, especially coal; some of the first open pit mining techniques were developed in the city.
