Columbia is the fifth largest city in Missouri and the largest city in the geographical center of the state. With a population of just under 100,000, it’s the principal city of the Columbia Metropolitan Area, which includes most of Boone County, of which the city sits as the county seat. Columbia sits roughly in the middle, between St. Louis and Kansas City.

The city was incorporated in 1821, and three major industries (medicine, education and insurance) helped to create a solid foundation for the city that still continues to this day. The city was wholly untouched by the Civil War, mainly because the city was a border state (a slave state that stayed loyal to the union) and neither side wanted Missouri to join the other. After the war, manufacturing began to grow, and today the city is known for its great education, medicinal and insurance sectors.

Temperatures in the city rarely get above ninety degrees in the summer, and lows rarely get below the mid 50’s, usually hovering around 60 or so. However, during the winter months, temperatures drop to around 40 degrees as a typical high, and lows extending as far down as the mid teens for much of the state.
