Clarksville is the fifth largest city in the state of Tennessee (after Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga) and is the seat of Montgomery County. It is the third fastest growing city in the state of Tennessee and the ninth fastest growing city in the country in terms of population, and in 2000 the city’s population was over 110,000.

The city was founded in 1780, though different trips several years before had helped to map the region and settle on actual building sites for the city to begin construction. It was originally designed for returning soldiers of the Continental Army, but many families who weren’t in the army quickly settled the place and the city began to expand.

The city was a strategic area to control, due to its location on the Cumberland River, and control of it was passed back and forth during the Civil War. The city was relatively unharmed, however, and reconstruction was easier on Clarksville than most other cities. During the 20th century the city has been expanding rapidly, annexing and incorporating several different neighboring cities.

The city is characterized by long summers and cool, short winters, and during the summer months the average high is typically right around 85 degrees. Overnight lows for the city stay right around 60 degrees, while in the winter temperatures drop considerably, with average highs staying around 33 degrees and the lows dropping well below freezing.
