Canton is a city in and the largest city of Fulton County, Illinois, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 15,000. The city is a member of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It was founded in 1825 by Isaac Swan, and thanks to the many coal mines in the area the city grew quickly. It was a mining town for quite some time and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a major manufacturing town. Today, however, the economy has shifted and the industrial sector has embraced high-tech industries and has shied away from mining and manufacturing.
