It is the principal city in the Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Washington Parish. Bogalusa is also a part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1906 as a housing area for workers of the Great Southern Lumber Company. Employees working in the area began living in the area and though the mill closed in 1938, the city was entrenched and continued to grow rapidly. It was incorporated in 1914 and at its peak the city had over 30,000 residents. Population growth slowed and in 2005 the area was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, though much of the city was spared.
During the summer months the city’s temperatures typically get up to around 95 degrees during the day, with overnight lows typically dropping to around 68 degrees overnight. During the winter months temperatures drop to around 67 degrees during the day, with lows hitting around 55 degrees overnight.
