Billings is the largest city in the state of Montana and is ranked #259 on the list of 259 US cities with populations over 100,000. It is the county seat of Yellowstone County and is the principal city of the Billings Metropolitan Area and despite its size is a cultural hub of a vast area, mainly due to its location. Billings, again because of its location (pretty much in the middle of nowhere – the next city that is even close to Billings in terms of size is over 350 miles away), serves as a major tourist destination, making tourism one of the top draws of Billings.

Although natives had been frequenting the area for about 2100 years, William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) was one of the first Americans to survey the area. The city proper was founded in 1882, and the addition of a Northern Pacific Railroad line through the city earned it the name “The Magic City,” because people would say it would grow “like magic.” After World War II, the city grew even faster, blooming into a major medical, cultural and financial center in the region.

The temperatures in the city, during the summer months, typically hover around 80 degrees or so during the day, and drop down to around 25 degrees at night. During the winter months, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 20 degrees, and during the night temperatures often go below 0 degrees. This is mainly due to the fact that the city lies in a very arid, yet cold, region.
