Barnstable is the county seat of Barnstable County and is the largest city on Cape Cod. It is actually comprised of seven distinct, different villages, each with its own personality and charm. The largest, Hyannis, is Barnstable’s main business district, and is home to many different restaurants, bars, tourist destinations, and is also the main harbor for the city.

The city was first founded in 1636 and named after Barnstable, Devon, England, and was incorporated in 1639. Initially, the city was settled by farmers, due to its fertile soil, but later on fishermen and businessmen came to the city as well. Salt companies were common, and during the 19th century the city became known as one of the best tourist destinations in New England. Today, there are plenty of places to spend money in the shopping district of Hyannis, and several presidents, including the prestigious Kennedy family, have their summer homes in Hyannis.

The city lies in a mix between a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate, a situation that is normal throughout New England. Summers are warm and humid while winters are incredibly cold, windy and snowy. Summer temperatures rarely reach higher than 85 degrees, while lows can drop to around 65 or so; however, in the winter, temperatures reach no higher than the mid 40’s, and oftentimes lows are below freezing.
