Norman is a city in as well as the county seat of Cleveland County, Oklahoma, and is located just 20 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City, the largest city in the state. Norman is currently home to a population of over 118,000 residents, it is the third-largest city in the state of Oklahoma by population and is a part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Norman is the home of the University of Oklahoma, the largest university in the state, with a student population of close to 30,000. The University is also one of the largest economic contributors to Norman, and a cornerstone of the city today.
Norman was first established in April 1889, when the Oklahoma Land Rush brought thousands of settlers to the Oklahoma state line for a literal land grab starting on the 22nd of April. By nightfall on the first day, over 150 people had settled into the area that would become Norman, and by nightfall of the second day parts of what is now considered downtown Norman had already been constructed.
Incorporated in 1891, by 1913 there were over 3,700 residents in Norman. The Oklahoma Railway Company extended their passenger service down to Norman from Oklahoma City, spurring additional population growth, and the construction of the University of Oklahoma in the 1940’s brought even more people. Today, it is still one of the fastest-growing cities within the Oklahoma City metro area.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Norman tend to reach into the upper 80’s and even into the lower 90’s during the day, with temperatures over 100 degrees uncommon but not unheard of.
Overnight lows in the summer usually fall into the upper 60’s to low 70’s, giving Norman and much of the area a hot feeling during the summer months, which cools down in the fall and into the winter. Winter highs only reach into the low 50’s, with overnight lows often dropping into the upper 30’s and lower 40’s. Snow is relatively uncommon as well, though again, it is not unheard of.
