Newport News is an independent city located in in the U.S. state of Virginia, currently home to a population of over 183,400 residents, making it the fourth-largest city in Virginia by population. Located within the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and directly north of Norfolk, a large naval base, Newport News’ economy is based heavily on the military, and serves as a major adjunct to the naval base at Norfolk. Newport News was settled in the early 1630’s and was originally known as Warwick County, one of the eight original shires of Virginia. The area that would eventually develop into Newport News remained rural farmland, undeveloped until the end of the 19th century and the rise of Virginian industry, particularly in the south. Extensive development of the area began in the early 1880’s, with railroad lines being built through the area and expansion of industry, and by the early 20th century Newport News had becoming a thriving transportation and logistics center in the region, a role that it still fills to this day.
During the summer months, average daily highs usually reach into the mid-to-upper 80’s, with overnight lows often dropping into the upper 60’s and lower 70’s.
