Kenosha is a city in and is also the county seat of Kenosha County, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Home to just under 100,000 residents, Kenosha is the fourth-largest city in the state and also the fourth-largest city on the shores of Lake Michigan, with only Chicago, Milwaukee and Green Bay being larger.
Located in far southeastern Wisconsin, Kenosha sits just 35 miles from Milwaukee and 50 miles from Chicago, the latter of which is one of the most popular auto transport locations in the country. Because of this, Kenosha sits within the Chicago metropolitan statistical area.
Kenosha was first settled as early as 1835 and was officially platted in 1836. Several names were tested before the community settled on Kenosha in 1850, when the city was incorporated.
Kenosha was a major automobile manufacturing area for years during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though the last automobile manufacturer, American Motors Corporation (AMC), was sold to Chrysler in 1987 and by 1990 the last of AMC’s manufacturing facilities in Kenosha were demolished.
Kenosha, unlike many other automobile manufacturing cities that saw massive cuts in jobs and steep unemployment hikes during this time, managed to diversify its economy early, and as such the old manufacturing facilities have been turned into apartments, parks, condos and commercial properties.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Kenosha tend to reach into the low-to-mid 70’s during the day, with overnight lows often dropping down into the low-to-mid 60’s.
