Independence is a city in as well as the county seat of Jackson County, Missouri, and is currently home to a population of over 116,800 residents. Independence is currently the fourth-largest city by population in the state of Missouri and is considered a part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to over 2.34 million residents. Independence is known today as the “Queen City of Trails,” as it was the departure point for several major overland trails during westward expansion in the mid-to-late 19th century. Independence was founded in 1827 and was named after the Declaration of Independence. It quickly grew into a prominent frontier town, mainly due to its location near the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers, which helped to open up trade routes, particularly of fur. The town was the westernmost in the United States when it was founded, and played a not-insubstantial role in the western theater of the U.S. Civil War – it was the site of two large battles between Union and Confederate forces in 1862 and 1864. The town is also the home of former President Harry Truman, and today is the site of the Truman Presidential Library and Museum.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Independence usually reach into the low-to-mid 80’s during the day, while overnight lows usually fall down into the mid-to-upper 60’s. During the winter months, average highs only reach into the low-to-mid 30’s during the day, with overnight lows often dropping down into the mid-teens.
