Bowling Green was founded in 1798 by settlers moving into the newly-opened territories west of the Appalachian Mountains. Bowling Green began to grow as the United States railroad lines began creeping west; by the time of the American Civil War, Bowling Green was large enough to be named as a provincial capital of the Confederate States of America.
