Auto Transport to and from Athens
Athens is actually a unified city-county in Georgia, where the city and the county are basically one big county. It’s the only city in Clarke County, hence the name Athens-Clarke County, and is a college town (the University of Georgia is located there). The university is responsible for much of the town’s growth in recent years. The city is home to over 100,000 people, and in 1991 was consolidated into a city-county after a measure was passed.
The city was founded in 1801 as the site of the first state-supported university, and the school was built in just three years. The city proper was named after the historic city in Greece, mainly because Plato and Aristotle taught there. During the Civil War, the city was transformed from a peaceful college town into a massive supply center for the Confederacy, although it did not see much fighting. After the war, the city continued to grow in leaps and bounds, and in the 1960’s was home to several Civil Rights incidents, including a murder outside of town and the first two black students to enter the University of Georgia.
The city itself is a typical Georgian city in terms of climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Snow rarely falls in the city, and the average high during the summer hovers around 90 degrees, while the low rarely falls below 68. During the winter things tend to cool down somewhat, but not a whole lot. Average highs are around 55-60 degrees, while the lows cool down to around 35 or so.
