Ames is a city in Story County, Iowa; according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 50,000, making it one of the largest in the county. It is the principal city of the Ames Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the much larger Ames-Boone Combined Statistical Area.

Ames was founded in 1864 as a small station stop on the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad. It was named after Congressman Oakes Ames, of Massachusetts. He was influential in building the transcontinental railroad at the time and the area was founded near the railroad crossing of the Skunk River.
