Alexandria is the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, and lies on the banks of the Red River at virtually the geographic center of the state. It is the principal city of the Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of just over 147,000; this area incorporates all of Rapides and Grant parishes. The population of the city proper was only 46,000 at the time of the 2006 census.

The city began as a Spanish trading post, which was in turn handed over to the United States and continued as so for quite some time. It was known as a rugged place, full of wild and lawless people, and it wasn’t until the early 1800’s that the city was built and law was placed in the city. During the Civil War it was a strategic point, due to its location on the Red River, and was fought over by both the North and South several times during the war. After the war, the city flourished, and today is a quaint town with a rich historical background.

The climate is humid subtropical, which means that summers are typically hot and humid, and unlike most Midwest cities, summers are mild with the occasional cold snap during late December or early January. Average highs during summer hover around the upper 90’s, while the lows drop around 65. During the winter, temperatures get up to about 65, while lows drop in the low 50’s to high 40’s.
