Current Auto Shipping Industry Announcements

July 2008
With add-on costs rising so haphazardly for air travel, here is a useful guide to air travel fees.

February 2008
In Europe, concerns are being raised that driving new cars directly from the manufacturer to the dealer and then on to the customer is leading to tax and registration fraud. The European Commission (EC), in response, is proposing that the current method of delivery-by-driving actually be excluded from the European Union (EU) TIR (International Road Transit) system that acts to simplify customs between different member countries inside the EU.

Under the current TIR system, custom duties and taxes are only imposed at the destination. In other words, goods crossing several different international borders—in transit—are taxed and inspected in the delivery country only, making transit easier and transit times quicker. Under the TIR system, cars being moved by an auto transporter is relatively easy to control, while driving cars to customers runs the risk of the cars being stolen and then diverted onto the black market—which is a "higher risk of fraud," says the EC.

The solution: exempt such deliveries from the TIR system, which would limit it to "passenger cars transported by means of other vehicles;" i.e. transport trucks. Read more...

January 2008 Happy New Year!
Once again, fuel prices are rising and the auto transport industry is suffering for it. A spike in commodity prices encouraged traders to seek refuge in energy and some mining stocks but industrial and transport companies were punished amid the threat of higher costs, putting the burden of the higher costs on the customer.

December 2007
The FMCSA has voted on a final rule regarding hours of service for commercial motor vehicle transporters. The new decision will allow up to 11 hours of drive time and a 14 hour drive-window with at least 10 hours of rest--that is, not driving. The ruling goes into effect 12/27/2007.

In other auto transport news the price of crude oil hits $100 dollars a barrel and diesel gains to $3.46 per gallon, which is an increase of 4 cents.

November 2007
GM is revealing a new hydrogen-electric hybrid vehicle. It's dubbed the Provoq, and it's boasting upwards of 300 miles on one fill-up of hydrogen.

Cadillac is producing it, meaning that gasoline could be a thing of the past sooner than you thought. Although no prices or release dates have been announced, this has the public in a stir.

October 2007
Nokia purchases Navteq for a massive $8.1 billion. This could mean that cell phone integration into GPS tracking software could be a breeze, making finding your trucks that much simpler.

Also, Several different Mexican trucking companies have been cleared to travel freely between the United States and Mexico, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

September 2007
A petition has been filed by the ATA (American Trucking Association) to contest the new hours of service policy given by the FMCSA this month. The belief is that if the new service hours go into effect, we could see several changes in supply and this could, in turn, hurt the transporters financially.

August 2007
With the terrible bridge collapse in Minnesota just past, the DOT is now requiring states to reexamine bridge trusses on steel bridges and to reinforce where necessary.
